Search
The search tool will be most useful for coaches, as it provides a simple interface to search both present and past quizzing materials. It does not require any download or login, only a modern browser and an internet connection. It is also quite versatile. It provides a number of useful settings to help you optimize and customize your experience.
The chart below shows all settings and their possible options. Each setting is then explained in detail farther down.
Settings:
Tip: each name attribute is a link leading to its explanation
| Name | Options | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Division | Beginner, Junior, Intermediate, Experienced | Determines the range of verse based on the quizzer's division |
| Algorithm | Default, Simple, Vector | See the explanation |
| Material | 2025, 2024, latest | Select from a collection of quizzing materials |
| Highlight Verses | true, false | True by default; set to false for better performance |
| Underline Verses | true, false | Determines whether to underline unique parts; also improves performance |
| Verses per Page | integer from 5-20 | Sets the amount of verses displayed per page |
| Min | integer from 1 to the value of the "max" setting | Selects the start of the range of verses to search through |
| Max | integer from the value of the "min" setting to length of the material | Selects the end of the range of verses to search through |
| 1 Time | any color | Determines the color of all words which appear exactly once in the material |
| 2 Time | any color | Determines the color of all words which appear exactly twice in the material |
| 3 Time | any color | Determines the color of all words which appear exactly three times in the material |
Division
The possible options for the division setting are beginner, junior, intermediate, and experienced. Each option corresponds to the bible quizzing division by the same name. The range of material will match this setting.
Algorithm
The algorithm setting is more applicable for those seeking to make their searches more accurate. The search tool works by iterating through every verse between the minimum and maximum settings and then comparing it to the text you have typed. The algorithm setting is what determines whether or not a verse is a match. Each algorithm is explained below.
Default Algorithm
The default algorithm combines the methods of both the simple and vector algorithms, making it the most useful for the average user, which is why it is the default, as the name implies.
Simple Algorithm
The simple algorithm checks if the search phrase is contained within the verse, and if so, then there is a match. In cases where you need to find how many times a phrase appears within the material, the simple algorithm should be the go-to choice.
Vector Algorithm
The vector algorithm is similar to the simple algorithm, except that it breaks up the phrase you are searching for into each word. Once it has done that, it uses each word to match with the verse, in the same way that the simple algorithm does. A possible use case might be that you have several unique words, and you need to see which verses contain at least one of them.
Material
This setting changes the range of verses according to the year. For instance, this explanation was written in the September before the start of the 2025 quiz year. If the either the latest option or the option for 2025 were chosen, then the range of material would only be from John.
Please note that each range of material is generated manually using a script, so the material may have been generated incorrectly. If you do find an error, please contact us and report it.
Highlight Verses
The "highlight verses" setting defaults to true, since it highlights unique words, which is a very helpful feature for quizzers and coaches. However, on some devices, performance could become an issue, and due to the numerous iterations required to find each unique word; setting this to false could have performance gains.
Underline Verses
This setting is similar to the "highlight verses" setting, except that it determines whether or not to underline the unique beginning and ending of each verse.
Verses Per Page
If the search tool finds a large number of verses matching your search, then it will split the matches into pages. Each page will show a number of verses corresponding to this setting.
Min
This setting is rather simple. It changes the range of material through which the tool will search. For most searches, this will be unimportant, but it could in some uses cases, such as if you seek to find a repeated phrase in certain part of the material.
Max
The "max" setting is the same as the "min" setting, except that it sets the end of the range of material that will be searched.
Also note that this setting will not change itself if the material is updated, so if you had this setting set to the very last verse in the material, and then the material is updated, this setting will not change, and you might not notice. However, if you are not searching the entire material, then a small notice will pop up beneath the search bar, since you might forget to update it.
1 Time
This setting is only aesthetic. If you have highlighting enabled, then the search tool will highlight one time words using the color chosen in this setting. The color picker should function properly in most, if not all modern browsers, but if it fails to do so, then please contact us.
2 Time
This setting is exactly the same as the setting for highlighting one time words, except that this setting choses the color for words that appear twice in the material.
3 Time
This setting is exactly the same as the setting for highlighting one time words, except that this setting choses the color for words that appear three times in the material.
